I can see it in the parents’ eyes…when their darling little child is just not cooperating during a photo shoot. The’ve invested their money, and scheduled their time, the weather is lovely and everyone is actually dressed and coordinating. It’s’ just NOT OK for them to shrivel up now! Well, let’s face it, there are so many reasons kids react this way. They are tired, scared, shy, hungry, and a million more emotions. Getting their photo taken is just not normal for some kids, and they have a really hard time adjusting. Fear not. Almost every little one that I’ve photographed that starts this way, eventually comes around. There’s a reason I say a “1-2 hour shoot”. No child is going to be agreeable to TWO HOURS of picture taking. No. This time is scheduled for a warm-up, if you will. Or a pre-shoot snack. Or long potty breaks. Or clothing malfunctions/trashing. It’s all part of it, and with a little patience and working on the child’s schedule, we get through it. One thing I’ve learned is that you can’t push a child to do something they don’t want to do. And getting frustrated only complicates the matter…because on top of all they are feeling, they now know their parents are angry too. So breathe deeply. Accept that each child has different needs, and give them a little time. It will pay off if you do…because with a little patience, you might get smiles like this.
