Memorial

Last weekend, I went to a family reunion in Chicago. While we were there, we had a memorial service for many of our family members that have left us. Most of the family is Eastern Orthodox, so the memorial was led by an Orthodox priest. The services are really beautiful and the traditions are as well. A dish of wheat is prepared as well as holy bread and wine. The wheat has special significance as it is a symbol that the deceased will resurrect from the grave. (As wheat is put into the ground, dies and is reborn to bring fruit, so also those who have died, though their remains are dormant, will resurrect to a newer and fuller life in Christ.) Nuts and sweets are also included. The candy being a symbol of the sweetness of everlasting life. Just a few pictures from that day…
