new direction | the beauty sessions

For a very long time now, I have loved photographing people. Kids stole my heart and attention early on. Then I began to really appreciate the deep emotions and visual candy that was weddings. As my work and my life continues to change and progress, I am so grateful to one constant throughout: women. Women who fall in love, get married and have a baby or two. This is a rich, gorgeous time to document, but there is so much more that we women experience. Perhaps you don’t find the love of your life or don’t feel the desire to have children, or sadly aren’t able to have children. What about after the babies are grown up and we struggle to find who we are after giving away so much of ourselves? I’m surrounded by women who love deeply and are strong and incredibly beautiful. I want to give them more.

I am going to be turning 40 this year, and this is the first birthday that has made me pause a bit and say, “Ummm, I’m not sure I’m ready for this one.” But here’s the thing. I am ready, and I can’t wait to see what this decade is going to bring. The thirties were hard work! I grew a business, got married, had three babies, and throughout it struggled both physically and mentally. This decade I’m hoping to enjoy the fruits of all of my labor (literally and figuratively.) I can’t wait to watch my boys’ paths of discoveries. I appreciate those moments of peace when I know who I am and feel confident about that. I am even starting to be ok with how my body has changed after 3 pregnancies…not to mention nursing 3 babies. I now look at women older than me and appreciate them in ways I never have before. Wisdom is incredibly becoming.

This leads me to officially announce a new style of photo shoot that I am offering: The Beauty Sessions. You come to the studio, get pampered and get photographed in a way you never imagined. Your hair and makeup is done to perfection by Nicole Ratajczak (who has been brainstorming this with me for far too long), you drink some wine, listen to music and basically enjoy the experience as much as the final product. Make it a girls’ day out and bring a friend or two. Book it when your mom is in town and get photographed together and separately. Give me a call when your daughters are home from college and all of you come in to bond and document yourselves at this age. You don’t have to be  young or skinny or anything but who you are today. It’s a special treat, and you deserve it!

Last week, my lovely Czech friend, Andrea, joined us to help show what we had envisioned. She and I have been friends since we met in a prenatal yoga class 8 years ago. Our lives have gone in many directions, but we always pick up right where we left off. She was so fun to photograph in this way! She even indulged Nicole and I a bit with some big hair at the end just for fun. Give the studio a call to set up an appointment if you are ready to do something special for yourself (or your wife…hint hint.)

  • Karen Krueger - Andrea looks FABULOUS!!! She looks as if she is having a great carefree time. Her attitude (or perhaps the wine) made her look so beautiful.
Sign me up…I could use a boost (If you think you could do anything with a more experienced (not old) woman).ReplyCancel

  • Andrea - Kisa and Nicole – what a perfect combo! I have always trusted Nicole with my hair. She’s the one I let cut my bangs for the first time since high school ( crazy big banks then 🙂 ) Lately I haven’t had time to visit Nicole as you can see in the “Before” picture! It didn’t take much that afternoon before I had healthy, shiny waves! Beauty! Kisa, you are so fully into everything you do! ( maybe that’s why you and I can’t be finished after having one bottle of wine 🙂 I trust you as a person and I trust your eyes. Thank you for your guidance during the shoot. For me, that afternoon went from surprised, to learning a little about photography, to feeling like myself and beautiful, and maybe even a little adrenalin rush. Beauty!ReplyCancel

  • kisa koenig - Love all your comments…especially you, Andrea, and hearing your feedback and experience. We had so much fun!ReplyCancel

  • Jay Rodriguez - I love the results when compared to before and after. I was looking at you lighting technique and I had to compliment you on a great job. Not only did you nail the lighting and the results but your dedication to driving the person to feel good about themselves during a photkshoot really shows in her smile!
    Awesome job, great blog post!

  • Aireann Lindsay - Hi Kisa, it’s Aireann, Any’a sister. What an amazing idea. You are so incredibly talented and I’d really love to make an appointment with you for this special photography session. Please let me know how to go about booking a spot!ReplyCancel

  • Karen Krueger (Mom) - I am now home after the most delightful experience with my daughter. I haven’t felt beautiful in YEARS! When I saw my pictures, I gasped! I couldn’t believe I could look so good. You insisted on a profile picture, which I never allow, but, my sweet daughter, all I can say is, “Thank You”! You put me at ease and I loved it! I never believed that I could feel beautiful at my age, but, now I feel the “old lady” looks darn good for her age. How’d I get so lucky to have such a talented, loving, caring human being for a daughter?
I love you and feel so blessed,
    MamaReplyCancel

    • kisa koenig - Thanks for taking the time to write this, momma. I can’t wait to blog the entire session so everyone else can see. Be warned, though. Your friends/family are going to go nuts over them 🙂 I am honored to have such a beautiful mom, inside and out. You taught me everything I know about people. xo kisReplyCancel
